Radnor Lake State Natural Area
Nashville-Davidson County, TN
20 May 2009
The last of the regularly-scheduled Spring 2009 NTOS Wednesday walks around
Radnor Lake took place this morning under brilliant blue skies and dazzling
sunshine.
Highlights included great looks at a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO which entertained
us by the spillway for at least 10 minutes. The bird was in plain view, out
in the open, frequently moving about. Nearby was a female BLACKPOLL WARBLER,
whose yellow legs were an instant clue for what otherwise might have
required a bit more observation for identification. Several PHILADELPHIA
VIREOS were clearly seen along the way. A BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, with the
probable help of a Yellow-throated Warbler, played a trick on us-some of us
heard a Yellow-throated Warbler and looked up to see a bird, which we
instantly tried to peg as the Yellow-throated, but careful study revealed
the bird we were looking at was a female Blackburnian. So much for those
"Confusing Spring Warblers"! We did eventually spy a YELLOW-THROATED
WARBLER. And a couple SPOTTED SANDPIPERS flew over the lake at some distance
from us with their tell-tale shallow, rapid wing beats.
All in all it was a nice finish for the season, and we'll do it again in the
fall.
