Feb. 21, 2009 Percy Priest Lake, Rutherford and Davidson Cos. TN
.
This morning 7 Nashville area TOS members birded sites on Percy Priest Lake.
We had windy conditions but rain and dark skys held off until afternoon.
Highlights:
.
At he dam: 65 Common Loons and a couple of Horned Grebes. Ring-billed Gulls
seen at each stop.
Fall Creek Rec. area: A large congregation of gulls seemed to be getting in
on a shad run. Mostly Ring-billed Gulls, about 200, with 3 Herring Gulls in
the mix; seemed like every other gull had a small fish in it's beak. One imm.
Bald Eagle fly-by.
Lamar Hill Rec. area: A second Bald Eagle seen, an adult, then the presumed
first eagle, the immature, circled overhead. No Bonaparte's Gulls seen all
day.
Bryant Grove Rec. area: 10 more Com Loons added, with one heard calling.
Couchville Lake: Only 8 Hooded Mergansers seen here at their usual spot.
Very low water, the lowest I've seen on Priest, and the fact that Couchville
had
frozen solid earlier in the month may be why Hoodies were not here in their
usual numbers.
My list from memory follows.
