April 28, 2007 Ensley Bottoms President's Island Shelby Co, TN Finally, diversity in spades at the pits. TWENTY species of WIND BIRDS seen this morning: American Golden-Plover - 3 still in basic plumage, Semipalmated Plover, kept coming up with 44-46 birds in all the pits, Killdeer with many young, Black-necked Stilts, numbers up and pairs tending nests, Greater Yellowlegs 4, Lesser Yellowlegs 360+, Solitary Sandpiper numbers still above 50, Spotted Sandpiper now 2 birds, Semipalmated Sandpiper -4, Western Sandpiper - 8 very colorful birds, Least Sandpiper, many in bright breeding plumage, White-rumped Sandpiper, First Of Season for me with 6 birds counted, Baird's Sandpiper 3, Pectoral Sandpiper total up from last week, Dunlin 1 in breeding plumage, Stilt Sandpiper 24+ in mix, plumage variable from basic to almost full breeding, Short-billed Dowitcher 1 just starting to molt, 5 Long-billed all sleeping, Wilson's Snipe 3 and Last but not least!! 4 full breeding plumaged female Wilson's Phalarope with a single male thrown in for contrast. There could have been another bird but 2 of the birds were separate from the 4 feeding females and were moving around. I never could get all counted in one run. All the swallows were present including my FOS Bank, scattered groups of Eastern Kingbirds everywhere. Migrating FOS, Mississippi Kites at the ridge above the pits making straight line flights along with Red-tailed and Broad-winged Hawks plus more Mississippi Kites feeding over President's Island where I located our male Scissor-tailed Flycatcher back on territory for the 4th year.
