Walker Branch State Natural Area, Hardin Co.TN
Doing a little birding before the start of a Natural Areas field trip on
Saturday I first heard and then saw one MOURNING WARBLER. I'm not sure how
often
they are seen in west TN (although west TN folks may consider the east side
of the river to be middle TN).
Walker Branch SNA occupies a transition zone section on the east side of
the Tennessee River. From tupelo swamp below, up steep hillsides to a ridge
topped with some native pine, the bird life represents those different
habitats.
Checking around the dam at Pickwick Landing two COMMON LOONS were seen above
the dam, and NO GULLS were seen either above or below the dam.
At Big Hill Pond State Park in McNairy County one GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was
seen. And it was good to see good populations of RED-HEADED Woodpeckers at Big
Hill Pond and Pickwick Landing State Parks.
