This past Saturday, as part of the North American Migration Count for International Migratory Bird Day, I headed up to Morgan County in the Cumberland Mountains of east Tennessee. Most of the time was spent at the hawk watch mentioned in Chris Sloan's post to TN-Bird. The rest of the time (and I didn't have much of that) was at the Vo-Tech school on the road to Frozen Head State Park. I don't have the numbers totalled yet, but the highlight there was a female MOURNING WARBLER in some willows. This place is worth a stop if you are heading to Frozen Head or Wartburg. Turn right into the parking lot soon after turning off highway 62, at the signs for Frozen Head. There is a large pond here which continues across the road. You can walk up along a chain link fence into a field and overlook much of the area - where over 200 Canada Geese were seen. In spring, regulars in this area are Willow Flycatcher, Yellow Warbler, Orchard Oriole, Blue Grosbeak. I have even seen a Common Raven from this site.
