Memphis, Shelby Co, TN
Today, I located 2 more nests of Western Kingbirds in southwest Memphis,
both nests are along high traffic streets in a busy industrial/warehouse
district. The nests are about 2 blocks apart on wood poles next to the street.
I'm
sure one pair is feeding young but the other apparently is just sitting on
eggs. These nest (there may be more) were found about 5 miles northeast of the
original Ensley colony. I was just driving through the area, having a few
minutes at lunch and going to check on the President's Island birds, when I saw
one bird perched on a wire one block over. As I left this location and took a
right down the next street, I saw another bird flycatch about a block away and
it return to a nest placed high on a very tall wood pole. The first nest is
only about 16 feet above the ground. I got photos of the first nest but I
don't think I can get a shot of the other as it is hidden but you can see a
few strands of grass hanging out from the cross bar where the bird returned
and
disappeared.
This makes the 4th location in Memphis where these birds are nesting and a
total of 10 confirmed nest (includes nesting hybrid females). Seek and ye
shall find.
Good Birding !!!
