I have been to other homes in Tennessee and Alabama to
enjoy western hummingbirds. Thus, Bonnie and I feel lucky
and priviledged to have hosted a western hummingbird here
in Nashville, even if it turns out to be for less than 24
hours. What a thrill.
Returning home from work on Wednesday, I went out into our
postage stamp sized front yard to check my wife's flowers
and watch the RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDs interact around
our feeder. I was stunned to see an adult male RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRD come to our feeder. Of course in short order
it established its domination over the RUBY-THROATs. It
was quite interesting to hear the distinct call differences
between the two species.
This morning, Thursday, it was in a tree next to the feeder
by 6 am. Fortunately, Chris lives only 5 minutes or so from
my house. He and Portia arrived by 7 am and set up the trap
while the Rufous male buzzed around them. The bird soon
was captured and Chris and Portia left by 7:30 am with a job
well done.
Bonnie and I stayed around for another half hour before heading
for work, but the RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD had not yet returned. We
will check for it again this evening. We live in a townhouse
complex, and there are a couple other hummer feeders at other
nearby houses, so if I do not see it at ours, I'll check out the
other feeders.
Many thanks to Chris and Portia for their prompt visit.
