Joseph Mast found a Savannah Sparrow on June 20 in a field along Bud Tanner
Rd. 0.5 mile southwest of US 70N in the northwestern part of Cumberland
County. Upon rechecking on June 23 he found two there. This morning (June
24) I went with him to follow up, and we found 3 singing Savannah Sparrows
and at least 2 others that we assume were females as part of pairs. There
were also 1-2 singing Grasshopper Sparrows. This field looked to have been
cut several weeks prior, as it was fairly short but had scattered taller
weeds, along with a small uncut section.
This constitutes a second apparent breeding "colony" in Cumberland County
this summer, the other being in the southern part of the county at Shadow
Mt. Estates off Dunbar Rd. where a maximum of 7 birds (4 singers) have been
found.
