[TN-Bird] More Sandhill Cranes

TN-Birders,

Warm breezes from the south/southwest made for more northbound Sandhill
Cranes over Pickett County on this last day of February, 2006. We live
about five miles west of Byrdstown near the north shores of Dale Hollow
Lake. The lake and surrounding bluffs must create thermals on which the
cranes can drift upward to gain more height. Today from 11:30am until about
2:15pm, my wife and I had 1250 cranes headed for their Summer nesting
grounds. Several groups were "thermalling" with all their squawking and
calling. Some of our "old timers" here still say they are geese because,
"I've heard them all my life and I know they're geese !!" With the help of
Robbie Hassler, Margo Hinkle and a few more who now recognize the sounds,
we're making a difference. Now we have people calling our house to report
hearing and seeing "CRANES !!!!"
