This morning at 10:30 Wallace Coffey did it again. Banded Ringed-billed Gulls
that is. Two individuals were banded bringing the total of Ring-billed Gulls
band by Coffey to four. This occurred just as blowing snow began.
The Launched Avian Restraint Utility System (LA.R.U.S.) was again employed
and functioned today as a snare as the two gulls caught had their wings tangled
in the pull cord during a feeding frenzy inside the strike zone of the trap.
Today's observations of feeding behavior added to our growing knowledge of
this species of "inner city" gull. We now have a working concept of what is
involved with a successful set of the trap. The key is to find enough gulls to
pressure themselves into a carefree feeding frenzy. Just as important, if not
more so, a general knowledge of what does not seem to provoke the desired
response has been added to our teams library of experience.
'Til we bird again
