The place I typically look is on the Stewart County/Montgomery County border just east of Cross Creek NWR. There are 6 major ponds and almost every spot I looked has dried up, even after the storms we have had. But, there were 11 Great Egrets yesterday in the one pond that has water left in it. Same pond also had 2 Great Blue Herons, a few killdeer and about 6 ducks I couldn't make out. On Saturday there were 9 great egrets, and for a few weeks back into July there had been one or two. Also on Saturday there was a Green Heron, which I had not seen there before, I think because they tended to be at the shallow ponds that are now dried up. The one pond that hasn't dried is connected to the Cumberland River, but even it has last over half its surface area. I realized one pond I thought was still okay wasn't when I saw a Great Blue Heron walking around on the surface yesterday. I had previously seen five green herons at one time there. It was just plain mud.
