For the past week I have been having Mornarch butterflies coming to my
hummingbird feeders. While some will fly when a bird comes in, others will sit
tight and suddenly flash their wings open and scare the bird away. This is
obviously intentional and it works. While I can't imagine a hummingbird
pecking a Monarch in the first place, it may be obeying an instinct passed down
from an experienced forefather that this is one insect that tastes so bad it
causes repeated gags.
I also have house flies and red wasps at my feeders. The wasps I can handle
but I haven't had flies before. Does anyone know how to keep them away from
the feeders? Some of them get through the insect guard into the feeder tray.
