[TN-Bird] Mississippi River-Ensley-Robco at Memphis

Nov. 16, 2008
Mississippi River
Ensley-TVA Lake
Robco, Shelby Co. TN

The river traffic was high Sunday morning, the river continues to fall and
the waterfowl rested after their long flights. There were 16 Ring-billed Gulls
and a single adult Herring on the upper Loosahatchie Bar. The following pods
of ducks were seen: Ruddy 52-19-7-16 and 9, Buffleheads 15-7, Lesser Scaup
20-45-80, Greater Scaup floating mid river 1 male - 1 female, Green-winged Teal
 2, Shoveler 23-12-5, and Coots 2-5.

At TVA Lake: Ring-billed Gulls flew in and out from McKellar, high number
16, Lesser Scaup 75, Greater Scaup 11, Ring-necked 35, Green-winged Teal 8,
Gadwall 17, Shovelers 11 with 5 Pied-billed Grebe and 12 Coots. Waiting for
scoters...........

At the "Pits", Least Sandpiper in numbers and "snowflake" now in her 4th
month, Dunlin, Western and Lesser Yellowlegs with lots of Killdeer, one setting

3 eggs, Mallards 9, Shovelers 84, 1 hen Pintail, and 3 Green-winged Teal. The
dark morph Red-tail has been joined by a Harlan's and there are at least 11
Red-tails hunting the area with a male and an immature Harrier. Four Kestrels
still left from the breeding season, 2 adults, 2 immature but things are
getting testy on hunting territories.

Robco Lake duck population went from 150 to 1500 over the week and in among
the hordes of Lesser Scaup, I found the leucistic bird that has returned now
for 4 years!! Sixty-five Ring-billed Gulls monitored the fish harvest of
the numerous DC Cormorants. A single Great Egret and an immature Bald Eagle
watched all the action.
Good Birding !!!
