[TN-Bird] Mississippi River Watch Oct, 9-10/08

Mississippi River
Shelby Co. TN

Not much Thursday AM on the river except for Great Egrets moving about to
feed. The entertainment was at the Pyramid where an immature Peregrine (one of
the darkest I've ever seen) was chasing the Rock Doves around and around the
building. It also chased off a Cooper's Hawk and a Red-tailed that dared to
try to soar over its hunting area. After all the fun, the Peregrine went out
and sat on the Memphis Bridge. The adult was seen again perched on Dacus Bar.

Friday morning showed sure signs that birds were moving. Floating down the
river were 6 Pied-billed Grebes separated in pairs about 15 minutes apart. One
pair held an adult and a bright first year bird. Three groups of Coots over
the period totaled 28 birds. Six Pintail Ducks, 4 Wood Ducks, 2 groups of
Ruddy ( 6 and 17), 4 Blue-winged in with 16 Green-winged, 6 Shoveler Ducks all
floated down the easy way and 1 flyby Hooded Merganser all in a short time
looked like the start of the northern waterfowl heading south. The
Blue-winged
have pretty much moved and the Green-winged are taking over. A single DC
Cormorant floated while a string of 88 took the quick way and flew in a
wavering
bee line south. One immature Herring Gull and no terns was a disappointing
turn.

The river hit ZERO Friday after falling 18 feet in two weeks. It should just
ease down another foot or so giving migrating birds plenty of places to rest.
