Sept. 3-4, 2008
Mississippi River -
Shelby Co.
Memphis, TN

Well, a couple of trips in the rain to see what was blowing, a morning trip
on Wednesday found a pair of SANDERLING on Dacus Bar along with numerous
Killdeer, 2 Spotted Sandpipers and 8 Black-necked Stilts on upper Loosahatchie
Bar. There were also 12 Great Egrets, 2 Snowys, 1 immature Little Blue and 6
Great Blue Herons. Not much moving in a steady rain but maybe Gustav will
produce as things start to return to the gulf.

Thursday, not too much more but a lone WOODSTORK soared over Loosahatchie
Bar and a single Caspian Tern preened on the upper bar. The swallows build up
is in full swing; Bank, Barn, Tree, Rough-winged and Cliff were seen skimming
the river and it is time for Cave to show up again.

At the "pits" in Ensley Bottoms, there was a very large number of Wind Birds
today and an hour's visit yielded 26 Lesser Yellowlegs a scattering of Stilt
Sandpipers, lots of immature Western and Semi-sands, fewer Semipalmated
Plovers but also 5 BAIRD'S Sandpipers (4 juvenile and 1 molting adult). There
has
got to be something lurking in this bunch of birds but it will take a few
hours to run through them, maybe they will stay for the weekend............
Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
