[TN-Bird] Mississippi River - Memphis - Common Terns/ Piping Plover

Aug. 17, 2008
Memphis River Front

This morning an hour's wait produced very little, even though the sand bars
have finally over come the grasp of the big muddy. Five Least Terns rested on
one bar and 6 Killdeer paced around the others. A sprinkling of Great Blues
and a single Great Egret. It will take about a week to 10 days before there
will be any food so shorebirds will just set down to rest for now.

This afternoon, there were 9 Least Terns but on the toe of one slip of sand
sat FIVE COMMON TERNS and one Forster's. I watched as they went through two
rest periods and two feeding rounds before they disappeared going up stream.
There were 9 Mississippi Kites feeding just north of the Wolf River and a
couple of Eastern Kingbirds.

The surprise later was a PIPING PLOVER that came in with 2 Pectoral and 2
Least Sandpipers around 4:30 and left as a group at 4:45............
Good Birding !!!

What is this feathered thing that lifts my heart to the heavens.
