Trenton, Gibson County
I was working in the N. Fork of the Forked Deer River
bottom in a 69kv transmission line right-of-way today
just outside of Trenton in Gibson County and had over
50 Mississippi Kites feeding over the tree tops and
over an open agricultural field! They were almost
impossible to count as they were actively feeding on
dragonflies and diving and sailing around all over the
place. This is the most kites that I've had in Gibson
County although numbers have definitely been
increasing over the last few years.
Over the weekend I heard my first Chuck-will's-widow
of the year from my yard in the Mt. Orange community
just outside of Trenton in Gibson County. I was out on
Saturday evening (June 7) and had several birds
singing in the darkness - some were expected, some
not:
+Chuck-will's-widow (first heard this year)
+N. Mockingbird (heard almost any night)
+Grasshopper Sparrow (2-3 singing)
+Chipping Sparrow (hear them occaisionally at night)
+E. Wood-Pewee (this one was the most suprising to me
and this bird sang away for about 30 minutes!)
Good birding,
Mark Greene
