Baneberry Golf course
Jefferson county (near Douglas Lake)
9:20 am
Hello,
I was playing golf this morning at Baneberry (south of I-81, exit 8, US 25) and
noticed a large dark bird with pointed wings swooping through the wood edge on
hole 13. I first thought common nighthawk, but the bird turned and perched in
a tree about 30 ft from ground. We were able to approach without the bird
flying, and observed (no binocs) an overall dark body, with lighter head, dark
mask-like appearance, and lighter feathers toward tips of wings. About 3
minutes later, came down hole 17, and saw the bird circling over trees, pointed
wings and broader tail (fanned??) We experienced strong thunder storms last
night, with 30-40 mph winds from West.....could have been blown in???
Other birds of interest this morning, 4 cormorants, 1 osprey, 22 purple
martins, hairy woodpecker, and chipping sparrow. Will try and return tommorrow
and report accordingly.
