Old Hickory Dam and Percy Priest Lake areas
Davidson Co. TN Nov. 18, 2006
Jan Shaw, Jon Mann, Susan Hollyday and Richard Connors spent most of
Saturday scouting area lakes for evidence of winter birds. Areas covered were
Old
Hickory Lake dam, and various sites on Percy Priest Lake: the dam, Cook,
7Points, and Vivrett access areas, parts of Long Hunter State Park, Couchville
Cedar Glade SNA and Anderson Rd. recreation area.
Highlight bird of the day was a male MERLIN perched in the open at
Couchville Glade. Merlin was a target bird for the day because we were curious
as to
wether the Merlin(s) would be back in their usual winter residence at Anderson
Rd. Rec. Area (we don't have a good documented arrival date for this spot).
But none were seen there between 3 & 4pm.
Otherwise birding was a little slow on the lakes, a beautiful day, but loon,
grebe, duck and gull numbers were not up to mid-winter levels yet. On Dec.
9th NTOS will have a field trip covering these areas and our annual Christmas
Lakes Count will be Jan. 1st.
Trip list for the day follows with some numbers a rough estimate.
