[TN-Bird] Merlin; Montgomery Cty

Thur Feb 21, 2008 7:45am

25 degrees F, 10 mph wind

While helping lead a field trip for Dr. Steve Hamilton and his Austin Peay
State University ornithology class this morning we observed a male Merlin
flying over Lake Taal on the base. The bird flew to the top of a tree and
perched there long enough for all the students to see through the scope. His
back was to us so the distinguishing bluish back (without rufous) and black
banded tail (with white terminal band) were visible. This was an appropriate
reward for the students for enduring such cold, icy birding conditions.

Other birds seen/heard on the trip:
Canada goose 25
Mallard 4
Great blue heron 1
Black vulture 2
Turkey vulture 6
Northern harrier 3 (1 male & 2 fem)

American kestrel 1
Killdeer 1
Red-bellied woodpecker 1
American crow 2
Horned lark 6
E. tufted titmouse 3
