[TN-Bird] Merlin; Marshall Cty

21 Sept 2008 6:00pm
NW Marshall Cty, TN
3 miles north of Caney Springs community

I noticed a dark bird perched on top of a dead snag yesterday evening while
doing some chores on the farm in southern middle TN. I grabbed the binocs and
was rewarded with nice looks at a Merlin over a 5 minute period as I moved
closer and closer eventually to within 70 yds. This bird was of the
'columbarius' subspecies and was a female adult or juvenile based upon the
brownish back and relatively larger size. During the time of observation the
bird even fanned its tail to reveal very nice looks at the dark tail with white
bands and terminal white band.
