Must be a good time for Merlins.
After work tonight (28 March 2006) I went for a walk in the woods
behind our house (west Knox Co) to see if I could find any more
warblers (see BTGN post from this AM) and try to locate the
Barred Owl nest. No luck with either of those but I did get
a 3 minute or so look at an adult male `columbarius' Merlin.
I was scanning the tall pines behind the neighbors' house where
the Great Horned Owl had nested a couple years ago in an old
Red-tailed Hawk nest. Two Red-tails appeared to flush from
here as I approached but I didn't spot a nest, in part because
I got distracted by the Merlin as it worked its way along the
ridge. It stopped and perched in a tree for about 2 minutes
then took off again, circling a couple of times then took off
patrolling down the ridgeline to the southwest.
This is my second Merlin sighting in our neighborhood; the
first was last year on 8 March 2005.
