[tn-bird] Mendota Hawk Watch Update

Hi Area Birders:

Here is the count for the Mendota Hawk Watch as of 9/24/02. The count does
not include some numbers for the weekend of September 14-15, which are to be
reported later.

The day started off rather slowly but after the sky cleared and thermals
began to rise around noon, hawks started moving. The highlight of the day
was a dramatic kettle of 330 Broad-winged hawks that boiled up over the
"point" and then swept over us like a big wave around 1:45 p.m.. Needless to
say, those who had wandered off looking for passerines in the bushes came
back in a hurry when the yelling started! Amid the excitement that ensued,
some cooler heads did manage to get them counted as they passed the tower. As
they say, this was "what it's all about." The site will be etched in my
memory for a long time! We also picked up another Peregrine Falcon and our
first Merlin of the season. The totals year-to-date also include the
additional birds for 9/23 reported by Larry McDaniel last night.

Observers included Bob Riggs, Bob Quillen, Larry McDaniel, Roger and Linda
Mayhorn, and yours truly. Harold Larkins and David Haynes also joined us for
the last hour.
