[tn-bird] Mendota Hawk Watch Update

Here are the counts for the Mendota Hawk Watch as of 6:00 p.m., 9/23/02. The
count does not include some numbers for the weekend of September 14-15, which
are to be reported later. There may also be some hawks counted today after I
left. These will be reported tomorrow.

Due to the inclement weather, only 23 Broad-winged Hawks and 2 Sharp-shinned
Hawks were seen over the weekend. (Thanks to Dave Worley, Rack Cross, Dwight
Norris, Allan Trently, George Larkins, Rob Biller and Larry McDaniel for
braving the elements to keep watch).

As anticipated, there was a good movement of hawks today following the cold
front. We were blessed with northwest wings, cooler temperatures, and clear
skies. Some clouds provided a backdrop at times, however, most of the day we
had to battle the bright blue sky. In addititon to a season daily high number
of Broad-winged hawks, other highlights included two Red-shouldered hawks and
another Peregrine Falcon.

Observers included Bob Riggs, Bob Quillen, Larry McDaniel, George Larkins,
Tom Parker, Bert Hale, Jamie Scott, Larry Larkins, David Haynes, Nancy
Barrigar, Tom Dye, Bill Grigsby, and yours truly. Also present for part of
the day were Tracy Garrett and her class from Lebanon Middle School, and Sue
Carter and her science class from Twin Springs High School. It is always
great having these fine students with us. They also show a lot of enthusiasm
and excitement.
