Mendota Hawk Watch Report for 9/20/06
It was a great day to be alive and on top of Clinch Mountain counting hawks.
The weather conditions were ideal for hawk flights-steady wind out of the
northwest, very good visibility, partly cloudy to mostly sunny conditions, and
natural air conditioning most of the day. In fact, it was rather cool early and
by 4:30 p.m. folks were donning another layer and hunkering down out of the
wind. Observers included regulars Larry McDaniel, Bob Quillen, Dr. Malcolm
Jones,
and Ron Harrington. We were also blessed by the presence of some "rookies"
who quickly demonstrated that they had the makings of great hawk watchers:
Nancy
and Gary Barrigar, Elizabethton, TN, and Betsy and Vic Briscoe, Harker's
Island, North Carolina. We manned the site from 9:00 a.m. until 6:15 p.m. The
best
hours were 9:00-10:00 a.m., and 3:00- 6:15 p.m. If you come up on 9/21 bring
some warm clothes. Should be a good day for hawks.
