This past weekend TOS held it's annual meeting in the Memphis area and
members birded, among other sites, Meeman Shelby State Park, Shelby County TN.
Woodland birding is great in magnificent Shelby Forest! and Saturday morning
was ideal for songbirds, cool and clear after overnight rain, and the cool
temps kept bird activity going all day. Nesting Swainson's and Cerulean
Warblers are one of the attractions there. I used to consider Swanison's an
elusive
bird, but I was able to get on several birds that were singing on territory,
at or above shrub level, and had great looks at them.
I stayed thru the weekend (Sunday was a wash out) and Monday was another
fine morning.
Midway thru the park there is a hunter-access gravel road along a stream, it
goes thru what's called bottom land hardwood forest. It was anything but
"silent spring" on this occasion; it was in fact one of the best experiences
I've had in the field in a while. The whole weekend was good in fact,
hopefully
others will post also.
My list follows, it's not the official compilation, but includes 20 warbler
species.
