[TN-Bird] McKenzie area 5/24 & 5/25

McKenzie area (Carroll & Henry Co.)
5/24 & 5/25/03

Highlights:

Olive-sided Flycatcher
Lark Sparrows
Mississippi Kites
Willow Flycatcher

Let me begin by saying that unfortunately we were unable to locate the
Henslow's Sparrows that I've had so reliably lately, on either Saturday or
Sunday. I met the Satterfield's when I got off of work Saturday morning, and we
went out to the area, later to be joined by the Bills. It was mid-morning,
10:30ish Saturday morning when we got there due to car trouble with my wife's
car, and despite the cool temp's, things were pretty quiet. We spent over an
hour in the area, with no sign of the Henslow's. We did get good looks at an
Olive-sided Flycatcher nearby (Henry Co.), which Stephen Satterfield was the
1st to spot. The Bills stayed in the area after we left, and hopefully got the
Henslow's. There is alot of habitat in the area, and they could have easily
moved only a short distance and be tough to find, or might just be laying low
nesting. Also seen Saturday morning with the Satterfields were good looks at a
pair of Lark Sparrows (Henry Co.), the pair of Mississippi Kites that continue
to be present in the Clear Creek Bottom (which I believe are nesting, and would
probably be one of the easternmost nesting records in the state that I know
of), and Willow Flycatcher in Carroll Co. where the birds have been regular.

Sunday morning I met and spent half the day with a visiting Colorado birder,
looking for a few eastern lifers, and working on her TN list. Conditions were
tough all morning with the weather, but we did wind-up with several birds
though. We tried for the Henslow's again, with no luck, but there was an
intermittent rain while we were there, with correspondingly little activity. We
did get Swainson's Warbler in Henry Co. (in the rain, but no sighting) for a
total of 13 species of warblers on the day, all breeding birds. We had great
looks at pair of Lark Sparrows in Carroll Co, which is a bird she was very
familiar with, but a nice addition to her TN list. We squeaked out several
lifers for her out of the rain today including Chuck-will's-widow, Acadian
Flycatcher, White-eyed & Yellow-throated Vireo, Prairie, Yellow-throated &
Swainson's Warbler. Another nice find was a Warbling Vireo nest, which Lisa
spotted.

I have posted a pic of the Warbling Vireo nest on my website at:

, in the "nest" photo album.

Good birding!!!!
