Just at the time when the Goldfinch and White-throated Sparrows are looking=
far from their best, we had a visit from two magnificent males today. The=
first was a gobbler in full dress. His wattles and pate would flush red a=
s he fluffed up, drooped wings, and spread his tail to no one in particular=
. His bronze feathers really shone. The large spurs were quite obvious, as=
was his beard, estimated at 10 inches - so long it reached the ground as h=
e stooped to feed. We can't wait to see him interact with the flock that ha=
s been coming regularly, onlysome now appear alone. Their tail-fanning dis=
plays suggest they are juvenile males, but there are no signs of spurs and =
the developing beards are short. Next came a wonderful Pileated Woodpecker=
. After making use of a rotted log on the ground, he inched up a very thin=
tree, showing off his blazing crest and his wide malar stripe. This was qu=
ite the largest Pileated I have seen, a really exciting view. Ralph and Kay=
brinkhurst, Lebanon, Wilson Co.
