In regards to your Wood Duck - she was thinking of using your chimney as a nesting cavity! Wood Ducks are cavity nesters and will sometimes try to use chimneys and stove pipes for nesting or roosting cavities. Several years ago my grandfather went to put some wood in his wood stove and when he opened it up a Wood Duck flew out into his living room! Two years later the same thing happened again! He also had a Chimney Swift and a couple of bats enter his house the same way. We used to tease him about those - everytime he went to open that stove we'd say "better watch out, there's no telling what might fly out of there"! About 6 weeks ago, during one of our cold snaps, I saw a Downy Woodpecker impaled on the barbed wire fence about 200 feet from where I saw the shrikes today. I really wanted to check it out further but the roads were bad that day and I didn't think I had time to linger-- and it was gone when I returned that afternoon. I presumed that a shrike was responsible for the Downy's death, but I was still pretty surprised that they would take something so big. Is that unusual? Moore County, 3/5/11 While getting into the car Saturday morning, I heard an unusual sound. I looked around and was shocked to see a female Wood Duck on my chimney. She was making a low tremolo--I've never heard it before. Anyway, it was quite a sight to see a duck (of any kind) on top of a house in downtown Lynchburg. I'm not sure what she was thinking!
