[TN-Bird] Little Gull & Say's Phoebe at Reelfoot Lake

November 29, 2005

Reelfoot Lake
Lake & Obion Counties

I had the 1st-winter Little Gull in Reelfoot Lake out to the north of the R=
eelfoot State Park boat ramp on Hwy. 21 in Lake County. The bird was almos=
t directly out from the Reelfoot Lake State Park Ellington Hall Visitor Cen=
ter boardwalk. I watched the bird amongst hundreds of Bonaparte's Gulls fo=
r about 5 minuted before I lost sight of it behind some Baldcypress trees.

I also had a Say's Phoebe between the Cypress Point Resort and the Reelfoot=
Lake State Park Blue Bank picnic area on Hwy. 21. There is a ditch with s=
ome large Baldcypress trees in it just to the north of the Cypress Point Re=
sort area. I was on the road that goes into the picnic area and leads down=
to the lake and ends at a turnaround where there is a small boardwalk at t=
he end. The bird was feeding with a group of about 25-30 Cedar Waxwings, 5=
-7 Eastern Bluebirds, a few American Robins, and a few Starlings and Grackl=
es. The waxwings were eating Baldcypress seeds and the other birds includi=
ng the phoebe were feeding down near the water. There was also an Eastern =
Phoebe feeding in the same general area. Jeff Wilson had told me last nigh=
t that he had thought that he had seen a Say's Phoebe over the weekend at t=
he West end of the Washout area on Magnolia Drive but had lost sight of the=
bird before getting a good look. Where I found this bird was about 1/2 mi=
le (as the Phoebe flies) from that area. I also checked that area and ther=
e were no birds there so it looks like the flock moved over to the SE a bit=
.

There were also 3-4 Greater Scaup in the area mixed in with the numerous Le=
sser Scaup. I did not see the Black Scoter but I did not have a lot of tim=
e to look for it. Also did not see the Red-necked Grebe but again time did=
not permit me to look for it for long. There were several Horned Grebes f=
eeding in the Keystone Pocket area. I ran into Nancy Moore while I was the=
re.

Hopefully these birds will stick around for the Reelfoot CBC as both would =
be new species for that count.

Good birding,
