[TN-Bird] Lewis County shorebird fallout

Jeff Wilson's rule of "bad weather = good birds" has proven true today here in Lewis County!

This morning (9/5/2011) I joked with my wife that we had experienced a major shorebird fallout, as our farm pond hosted 5 Solitary Sandpipers, a record high count. No other shorebirds, of course, just them. This afternoon (around 1:00 p.m.) I swung by our under- construction new wastewater treatment plant in the rain just to see if there was anything interesting. I was greeted by a shoreline covered with shorebirds! Before today, the Lewis County list had 6 species of shorebirds on it (including Killdeer, Snipe, and Woodcock). I added 5 more in a few minutes. The tally was:

Least Sandpiper 27
Short-billed Dowitcher 16
Solitary Sandpiper 5
Pectoral Sandpiper 3
Lesser Yellowlegs 8
Sanderling 1
Killdeer 4

All but the Killdeer and Solitary are first County records (to my knowledge). Hopefully in the future this new plant will continue to produce goodies; but it remains to be seen how the water levels will be maintained and to what extent access will be permitted. It is not yet in operation.
