McKenzie area (Carroll & Henry Co.)
4/23/03
I decided to try a different area this morning, along with trying to relocate
the Lark Sparrows from yesterday. In the 3 hours I was out I wound-up with 74
species, 3 of which being FOS birds for me. These three were Great Crested
Flycatcher (finally), Tennessee Warbler (1), and Northern Waterthrush (which I
had 3 of).
I wound up with 15 species of warblers, including 6 singing Nashville's,
whereas yesterday I didn't hear any. I only had Red-eyed and White-eyed on the
Vireo list though.
Quite a bit of my time was spent trying to figure the Lark Sparrows out from
yesterday. I spent some time in the area from yesterday, with no luck. I
finally found them (though not together) about a half-mile from yesterday's
location, in what is basically the other end of a big field. The male was
singing consistently from a section of power lines, although he regularly made
foraging forays into the grassy field. After 4 attempts to get decent photos of
Lark Sparrows in TN over the past couple of years, today was finally the day. I
have removed the picture I posted last night on my website and have replaced it
with a couple from today if anyone is interested. The link is

, in the "Uncommon to rare local birds (vol. 2)" album. I will keep an eye on
these birds and hopefully locate the others in their usual area. If these birds
stay, or others show up, I'll be glad to give directions to anyone that
happens to be interested.
Good birding!!!
