[TN-Bird] Kyker Bottoms moorhen, etc

Kyker Bottoms WMA

Hi folks,

Tracey and I walked the dogs and Allan at Kyker Bottoms today. The 3
of them are pretty good at reducing a species count! But it's fun.

The Common Moorhen is still there, but is now in the central, biggest
impoundment - where all the pintails were this winter, straight down
from the equipment barn.

We also had 2 LEAST BITTERNS. singing in the same spot - furthest
east impoundment where the Clendenens and Jean Alexander had them
over a month ago. Might be worth a wade to find a nest, as I'm sure
they are nesting there.

Otherwise we had most of the usual suspects, as follows:
Great Egret - just one. We've had 2-3 most trips.
Green Heron - at least 3, but 15+ sightings
Wood Ducks - at least 30 flight capable. I believe most were young
of the year
Mallard - just 2
Canada Goose - none?!? This is quite good news for the marsh
Red-shouldered Hawk - 2
Common Yellowthroat - everywhere
Yellow-breasted Chat - ditto
Indigo Bunting - hordes
White-eyed Vireo - several
Blue Grosbeak - one pair
Yellow-billed Cuckoo - 2 or 3
Purple Martin - 3
Barn Swallow - just 6, which is quite low for here. Also, no other
swallows. I usually count on 4 spp and many individuals.
Northern Bobwhite - heard them calling from at least 4 different
loci, and saw one. No idea how many are there.

I seem to be cursed when it comes to Willow Flycatchers. Haven't
hear one yet this year, and the only ones I've seen were ones we
banded at Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge in Knox County.

Charlie
