Kyker Bottoms WMA
South Blount County
2/19/05
Hi folks,
Today a handful of folks from Knoxville Chapter of Tennessee
Ornithological Society braved 21 degree weather, with wind and cloud
cover, to check out Kyker Bottoms WMA.
The wind really kept the dickie birds down, so even though we report
high numbers, there is really no telling what is out there. We had
fun watching a Red-tailed Hawk get blasted over and over by a pair of
Red-shouldered Hawks. Several species were singing (Song,
White-throated sparrows, Eastern Bluebirds, Northern Cardinals) and
there were Chorus Frogs singing. So it sounded more like spring than
it felt. Unfortunately we missed some good species that have been
reported there by reliable birders in recent days. Our numbers are
also a lot higher than one birder, and lower than another, so there
is obviously some flux there right now.
The count is:
