[TN-Bird] Kyker Bottoms - Saturday Nov. 25 - Late post

The Kyker Bottoms refuge in Blount County is closed for the winter but you
can still bird from the parking lots, which is what I did this past
Saturday. From the first pull-off by the equipment barn where the shrike is
usually seen you can scope through the chain link gate and fence to the
water where there are a lot of ducks. Saturday the most numerous were Ring
Necks. There were also Mallards, Gadwalls, a couple of Coots, a few Green
Winged Teal and American Wigeons and at least one male Northern Shoveler.
Many of the birds were sleeping (it was siesta time - around 11 a.m.) and
they were fairly distant so I couldn't ID them all. Probably 100-200 total
birds on the water but that's a very rough estimate.

The refuge manager (?) drove up and suggested that I might be able to see
them better if I walked across the field, which surprised me as I didn't
think that was allowed at this time of year. I did give that a try for a
short distance but discovered that I could see them much better from the
parking lot, especially since the gate was now open so I was only looking
through the fence. He stated that he had been seeing Northern Pintails and
American Black Ducks also, but I didn't see any during the short time I was
there. The Shrike didn't put in an appearance either.
