[TN-Bird] Kyker Bottoms: KTOS field trip, Blount Co, east Tenn

On Sunday, October 26, the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee
Ornithological Society held a field trip at Kyker Bottoms in south
Blount County: http://tnbirds.org/birdfinding/KykerBottoms.htm
Beginning November 1, this site is closed to visitors, although you can
still bird from the parking areas - and that can be well worth a trip.

Kyker is known for its mix of sparrows this time of year (we had 10
species). It usually also has a nice assortment of waterfowl - but there
was very limited open water visible, so some flyover geese and a couple
of Wood Ducks were all that were seen.

About 10 people participated. List is below, but here are some
highlights:

This continues to be a good place to find N BOBWHITE, especially in the
area around the barn, where at least 4 were present.
At one point we split into two and one group saw a large accipiter that
may have been a N Goshawk. A Goshawk was seen here this same time of
year maybe 3 years ago.
A nice surprise was the 3 TREE SWALLOWs that flew over in the late
morning.
A NASHVILLE WARBLER was a late-season surprise.
The lone VESPER SPARROW provided scope views for most of the
participants, while the HENSLOW'S SPARROW was seen fairly well (and
photographed) on top of some goldenrod.
Unfortunately, the LINCOLN'S SPARROW did not cooperate and only 2 or 3
people saw it.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWs were present in good numbers around the paved
parking area. Their singing was evident the entire time we were there.
This looks like it will be a good year for PINE SISKINs. We had two
small groups (one with about 9 birds, the other 5) fly over. The second
group turned and came back to stop in a tree near us, providing
wonderful looks.
