The Cove at Concord Park, west Knox County, Saturday, Feb. 16, 10:30 a.m. -
noon. At least 33 Bonaparte's Gulls outnumbering the ring bills on the sand
bar/mud flat off the southwest cove. Ten Horned Grebes (7 in the pond right
off the parking lot). And 14 Great Blue Herons in the small heronry just
across Northshore Drive. These are more easily viewable from the boat ramp on
the south side of Northshore Drive a few feet west of The Cove (just follow the
sign marked "Fields"). At least 8 nests, 3 just rudimentary but 4-5 large ones
with herons standing/sitting in them.
Late afternoon at Turkey Creek wetland, west Knox County, from the parking lot
at Baptist - not much water, only saw 2 ducks but they were good ones - a pair
of Green Winged Teal (M/F). In the creek that runs parallel to Lovell Road
near McDonald's just 7 Mallards. Didn't find the Barred Owl that I saw twice
in January.
