She stooped over the hay field next to us, then came in hot and fast under
the canopy of our lawn trees, neatly picking up a Bluebird that was
after some morsel in the grass. Adding insult to injury, the Cooper's Hawk
(I say she, due to size) perched on a Silver Maple limb within sight of our
picture window and proceeded to eat her snack. It took about 5 minutes. She
ate everything except the feathers, which came wafting down.
My wife was quite put out with the hawk for taking "our" Bluebird.
Me....not so much. This scenario, I'm sure, has played out countless times
over the millenia, even before there were people on our continent. These
are two beautiful birds and who is to say what is proper?
I must confess, however, that I wish the Cooper's had taken a Mourning Dove
instead, which is usually their meal of choice when they visit our property.
And, in a couple of months or so, hunters will be knocking the doves out of
the air with regularity.....there's that.
