[east Tenn...Roane County...Kingston - ~45 minutes west of Knoxville]
Today (Aug. 21) I visited the Kingston Steam Plant (Exit 350 off I-40) along
with a group from North Carolina led by Simon Thompson of Ventures. Highlights
included THREE tern species:
15 BLACK TERNS
2 CASPIAN TERNS
1 FORSTER'S TERNS
Some of the Black Terns were in their beautiful mostly black plumage!!
Shorebirds were not plenty:
several Killdeer
3 Spotted Sandpipers
1 or 2 Least
1 Western
1 or 2 Semipalmated.
There were a few OSPREYs, lots of BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONs, 2 PURPLE
MARTINs, 3 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTs, about 2 dozen BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 4
probable WILLOW FLYCATCHERs....
Before meeting the Ventures group I checked out the pines at the first part of
the Steam Plant (immediate right turn after turning off route 70 and passing
under the interstate). Here I found at least 3 BROWN-HEADED NUTHATCHes and
15-20 PINE WARBLERs!!! They must have had a really good breeding season here.
