Birded Kingston Steam Plant in Roane County Nov. 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. There
are still scads of HOODED MERGANSERS there - in the river and on both the
lower main ponds on the left as you walk in. At least 70 but the main group
flew to the river as I tried to count them.

5 Buffleheads on the small pond by the soccer field.

Also on the first low pond on the left were a few MALLARDS, GADWALLS, COOTS
(30-40), a male REDHEAD and only 2 CANADA GEESE. In with the Mallards was
a strikingly handsome hybrid (?). The same size and shape as a Mallard but
coal black everywhere except for a white throat, two small white wing bars
and possibly a small white spot at the base of its bill.

Took a detour through Oak Ridge on the way home as I-40 was backed up just
east of the Route 58 exit. It was almost dark but in a pond on the east
side of 58 I saw Ring-Necked Ducks -- about 40-50 of them.

Carole Gobert, Knoxville, TN
