[TN-Bird] Kingston Steam Plant - Red-Necked Phalaropes still there 8/28

Went to Kingston Steam Plant in Roane County, Tennessee late yesterday
afternoon (8/28) to look for the Red-Necked Phalaropes reported and
photographed so beautifully by Bob Howdeshell the previous afternoon. At
around 5:30 pm there were none to be found on the upper pond where Bob saw them
(the lower upper pond) so I walked past it and scanned the back part of the
closest, largest lower pond that has now become a large wet ash flat. A group
of resting Caspian Terns stood out and with them the much smaller 3 Red-Necked
Phalaropes. The Caspian Terns came and went, the largest number seen together
was 7. The Phalaropes also came and went and their numbers fluctuated between
1 and 3 though I always was looking elsewhere when they moved. Like the
Caspians they were just sitting around when not leaving or returning.

As I started to leave about an hour later, retracing my steps beside the lower
upper pond I spotted two Red-Necked Phalaropes swimming on it. I looked back
to the tern group down below to confirm that 3 phalaropes remained hanging out
with the terns. So there were at least 5 Red-Necked Phalaropes at Kingston
yesterday.

The two on the upper pond stayed quite a while. They were much closer than the
other 3 and didn't flush when approached fairly closely. They were actively
swimming and bobbing around but I did't observe any spinning. By this time I
had been joined by Patty Ford and her friend Stan and we all got great looks at
the Phalaropes. They were still there when I left at 7:15 pm.

Thanks to Bob for posting this. They were lifers for me.
