The Kingsport area wintering hummingbird,
reported earlier on TN-Birds, has been determined
as a Rufous Hummingbird. The identification was
changed after two area birders saw color in the
gorget that was inconsistent with that of a
Black-chinned. Previously, no color had been
detected.
On Wednesday, Johnson City birders,
Joy Crass and her husband Mark, report that
the bird had flashed orange in the gorget.
She wanted to know what could be concluded
from that. It probably ruled out a Black-chinned.
After consulting at length with Nancy
Newfield of Metairie, LA, Wallace Coffey and
Bob Riggs went to see the bird. It was Riggs'
first look. The orange could be seen. We were
at a loss as to what it could be. Coffey thought
the color could be more rose to red.
A phone call to Bob Sargent at Trussville,
AL, while we watched the bird from inside a
window and at a distance of two to three feet,
failed to be conclusive.
Sargent thought it would be best to capture
the bird in order to make sure all possibilities
were considered. Fred Moore of Steele, AL
drove in this morning (2/22) to capture and
band the bird. It was caught.
Moore concluded it was an immature
female Rufous Hummingbird. This is the same
as a second year bird (hatched last breeding
season).
One of the interesting observations
today was that the apparent blunt to rounded
wing tip, that we believed we saw earlier
this week, was simply not present.
Dave Worley, Riggs, Coffey and the
hummer hosts (Marilyn & Albert Walton, 1037
Catawba St.) were present for today's capture.
Later in the day, Moore, Coffey and
Don Holt, captured the wintering Rufous hummer
which has been at the residence of Carroll
Mottern, 115 Reynolds Rd., Elizabethton.
It is an immature (second year) male.
Thanks to everyone who helped and
made valuable contributions to the identification
of these birds.
