The KTOS field trip to Rankin Bottoms scheduled for Saturday, 25 Sept 2004, has been CANCELLED. Thanks to the heavy rains from Frances and Ivan along with TVA's decision to delay drawdown of the lake until September, Douglas Lake (hopefully) crested yesterday at just over 999ft -- four feet higher than summer full levels. The shorebird habitat is under as much as 25 ft of water. The main road is also underwater. Parts of Cocke Co. have been devestated by flooding of the French Broad and Pigeon Rivers. The flood gates are open at Douglas (and five other TVA dams last I heard) and are spilling 29,000 cubic ft/sec!!! That's a whole lotta water! Ironically, this is the very thing TVA warned could happen if they delayed drawdown. Maybe they will reconsider their decision to kowtow to LOUD.
