While walking on Island 40 Road located on a WMA adjacent to Shelby
Forest State Park on October 26, I ran into a flock of kinglets that
included warble. I had been looking for an Orange-Crowned, as this area
is an excellent habitat . At first glance this possibility was ruled
out, although the bird had a broken eye-ring, but the one on this bird
was only below the eye and was white. The supercillium was also white
as was the vent. The clincher was the small almost rectangular white
patch at the base of the primaries. It was the first Black-throated
Blue Warbler (female not immature) that I have ever seen in Shelby
County.
Black-throated Blues nest on our farm in Western Maryland, so I am
quite familiar white all their plumages, but this sighting was very
interesting for me as these warblers are unusual in West Tennessee.
A pair was sight several years ago on October 27 according to the SC
Seasonal Occurrences.
Four Winter Wrens and a Hermit Thrush were also present plus all the
possible Woodpeckers except a Hairy.
