[TN-Bird] Ibis Flock - Rankin

Rankin Area, Cocke & Hamblen counties, 9/24/09, 5-8 PM, by canoe
Douglas Lake elevation: 990.2 ft.

We set out from the coal tipple and traveled about a mile up the
Nolichucky River to an open mudflat below Leeper's Ferry Rd. (Hamblen
county) and logged an assortment of shorebirds there. Returning to
the French Broad, we motored up to the Holt Town Rd. pond (Cocke
county), where dead sedge covers the exposed terrain, and found fewer
birds. We returned to the Rankin Bottoms embayment and found great
egrets roosting low on buttonbushes at the farthest south end. A half-
dozen ibises flew in to join others on a muddy shore behind the
egrets. We usually see an ibis or two on Douglas Lake every summer,
but this group of 15 may be the biggest ever recorded there.
