Hi Anna, (and all the other herpophiles out there)

Sounds to me like you have the salamander with my least favorite
name: Slimy Salamander (Plethodon glutinosis). Though all virtually
amphibians are slimy, in order to be able to breathe through their
skin, this one is special. In addition to the normal, thin slimy
coating, it secretes some white stuff that is just a tad bit on the
noxious side, and which turns quite sticky after a few seconds on
your skin. And for goodness sake, keep your hands away from your
face after touching this one - while it won't do any long-term
damage, it is very irritating to nose and eyes.

Now on to birds...

On Saturday, Tracey Everson and I saw an adult male Ruby-throated
Hummer at her place on Montvale Road in Maryville (Blount County).
Pretty late for adult male, eh, Bob and Chris?

Alas, no sign of the many Palm Warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
that were all around Tremont on Friday. Nor the several Kentucky
Warblers that Amber Parker saw, and I kept missing.

Charlie
