We have had adult male Ruby throated Hummingbirds coming to
our feeders near the Harpeth River in the Nashville area for many
weeks, but it has only been in the past several days that we have
had females/immatures.
One male seen the past several days sits very strangely making me
wonder if he is injured in some way. We first saw him on the ground
in our patio. When he comes to the feeder he sits with his head
cocked back so that the bill extends nearly straight up and it is open
much of the time and rarely feeds. He also sits with tail feathers
spread.
We have also had a male Downey Woodpecker come at least twice to our
saucer shaped hummer feeders. He sits on the perch and sticks his
tongue into the hole to get sugar water. A chickadee watching him
do this one day attempted to imitate him but was unsuccessful.
