Greetings birders, I took a trip yesterday, (Jan. 24) down through Meigs and Rhea counties to check out the cranes. My Mom and Dad (Phine and Orland Britton, Greeneville TOS, and Carolyn Galloway spent a good 3 hours checking the area out. The Sandhill cranes were in abundance on the ground and in the air. We had no luck on the Whoopers. I talked to some folks that had seen them at the end of last week (2), but nothing current. One lady said she had seen 7 or 8from the Memorial overlook of the Tennessee river, but we had no Whooper luck there either. I did see a great egret among the many great blue herons, and another flock of Sandhills. An immature Bald eagle flapped over as well. Other highlights, Double crested cormorants, Northern Harrier, Black vultures, Brown thrasher, swamp sparrow. We finished up at Smith's Bend WMA, just below Watts Bar Dam. It covers over2700 acers of mixed woodlands, fields, brush, and ends at the river. Several roads and trails cut through the property, and we have already planned to return in the spring. Saw another flock of Sandhills (1000+) , Redtailed Hawk, American Kestrel, E.Phoebe, Yellow-rumped warbler, and Eastern Meadowlarks. Hope to see you birding, Ben Britton Morristown, TN =================NOTES TO SUBSCRIBER===================== The TN-Bird Net requires you to sign your messages with first and last name, city (town) and state abbreviation.
