[TN-Bird] Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge Report

January 24, 2009
Hiwassee Wildlife Refuge
Rhea County

At noon, less than one hundred sandhill cranes were seen in the refuge
from the wildlife viewing area. There were mallards, hooded
mergansers and gadwalls in the water. Seagulls and blue herons were
on shore. A small flock of cedar waxwings was seen on the road
leading in and another were seen near the viewing area.

The prize of the day was sighting eagles. An adult pair of bald
eagles was observed soaring and hunting over the water for an hour.
Three immature bald eagles were also seen over the fields and water
during that time.

Meigs County

Three American Kestrels were spotted on wires along Highway 58 a few
miles north of Decatur. They were spaced about ½ mile apart. I was
able to stop and view the third bird briefly with binoculars before it
flew back into the field.

It was a good day for birding.
