[TN-Bird] Hiwassee Update

Since a hooded crane sighting is now being reported by several observers in
Indiana, it seems likely that it is the same bird that was at the Hiwassee
Wildlife Refuge from at least December 13 until January 30. A few hundred
sandhill cranes flew into the viewing area at HWR this morning after they were
disturbed elsewhere. A few thousand sandhill cranes were seen in the Hiwassee
Island area from the Cherokee Removal Memorial Park overlook in Meigs County at
Birchwood early this morning before they flew out to the north (perhaps to
Armstrong Bend Wildlife Refuge). A similar number of sandhills returned to the
Hiwassee Island area late today. One whooping crane was sighted early this
morning from the CRMP. Immature bald eagles, numerous mallards, double crested
cormorants, and great blue herons were also in view from the CRMP.
